When planning the construction of the Casa del Mar in 2004, we were faced with the difficulty that nine large coconut palms were growing where we wanted the two hotel buildings to be situated. Taking into account our concern for an ecological balance, it was immediately clear to us that instead of sawing them off, we had to keep them alive by recolating them. Apparently for the first time in Zanzibar's history, with the help of 10 men from the village, 9 large coconut trees were dug out, moved and replanted in the area which was supposed to become our hotel's garden. The whole operation which took more than one week was a big attraction to the villagers, children and adults alike. Today, 2 years after the effort, we are happy that all nine palm trees are in perfect condition and growing well. |
